The Intellectualism of Stupidity Pt. 5

As Bonhoeffer watched Germany crumble, we would do well to heed his warning to the results of our craven stupor. We cling, we crave, we claw in a blind belief that we are the civilization that can transcend the laws of human descent. As we demand to avail ourselves the opportunity to repeat the disastrous mistakes of past civilizations, we should ask ourselves: Is this not the very definition of insanity?

Through the shadowy folds of Egypt’s mystery to the rage and hate of Germany, the marble columns of the Roman Empire, it’s fall into decadence, to the crumbling of the last great civilization, the United States, the last beacon of freedom, the pattern of demise is the same. It’s almost as if each civilization were made up of the same thing, humans. Creatures of habit who, despite being endowed with a capacity for reason, prefer to instinctively follow the habitual patterns of human frailty without regard of consequence.

The threads of time weave for us a pattern of warning if we would only heed it. The loss of a family structure for the nurturing and culturing of life leads to angry youths rioting and murdering in the streets. The stain and scars are in every history of every culture in its rise and fall.

For us who live in this last civilization, once called the great shining city on a hill, we are without excuse. No other peoples have had at their fingertips access to so much information, so much warning, a fabric of prophecy of sorts before us laid out on the loom of the ancients, woven a stark revelation of doom. Yet we choose to ignore them, willfully ignorant of the evidence before us left for our benefit so that we may skirt the destruction that plagues civilization.

Without life there can be no living and without living there can be no life. That is to say that the way we view life directly correlates to our quality of living. The propagation and culturing of life is the systemic lifeline to society. If a society fails to protect its foundational system of life, it will fail every time.

You need life to build a society, but the society also needs to build life. The rise and fall of a civilization is directly related to the way in which the peoples of that civilization culture life. The Marriage Construct must be protected. It is the security of the Nation.

It is through this Construct that the tenets of morality, work ethic, perseverance, law, respect, love, compassion, and love of country are passed on. For those in our Nation who feel that the government is best suited to teach those things, look at the results in the streets of today. Angry youths rioting in our streets, all nurtured and pampered on the teat of the government.

It stands to reason, if we could reason, that the foundation on which a structure is built must remain strong in order for that structure to remain strong. We have pulled away from the very thing that has kept us strong for decades, our heterosexual marriage tradition. The marriage construct has built this Nation. We are now reaping the fruits of its abandonment.

As violence fills our streets, the shouts of angry decadents spewing the reasoning for their debased acts are simply the outer rotting layers to the cancer that lies beneath. Generations of youths without a family structure to instill a code of decency, law, and order. Angrily they are tearing down the structure they have been taught to hate, while no one is doing anything to protect the foundation that holds it up.

More quickly now, we are pulled towards the ghosts of civilizations past to either learn or join them.

It’s the Weeping Angels

Like many of you, I have been trying to comprehend and understand this terror of statues that is sweeping our Nation. Perhaps it was the impending solar eclipse with all the hype of the Storm of the Century, which happens before every snow storm…or…dusting each winter. The weather reporter staring wide eyed into the camera, breathlessly warning everyone to “Stay tuned to our coverage because by tomorrow morning we could have, stay calm, but its very likely that we are looking at a full….inch and…..a….half…of sheer white terror, that’s real snow accumulation, on your daily commute. Keep it here folks. We will have all the experts covered in brand spankin’ new LL Bean togs here on set to get you through the mayhem.” But the solar eclipse whimpered in and out in much the same way the Storm of the Century usually moves through New England, at least Maine, as just part of the day.

With the solar eclipse being about as eventful as a soap bubble, its safe to say its not the solar eclipse. What has these…..people…..so freaked and frenzied about statues? I’ve been racking my poor little country bumpkin brain and I think I have the answer. I think I know and it is sheer terror.

Now I know I’m not as smart as, well, everybody, but there is moment in time when statues become terrifying. That moment was revealed to all of us deep in our subconscious, dredging up the hidden nightmare. It was the Weeping Angels episode of Dr. Who.

Admit It! Admit it! That episode freaked you out! I did me. How many of you, like me, have walked by a cemetery with those creepy angel statues and out of the corner of your eye; “Did it move? Not possible…I think that that statue moved. I THINK IT MOVED!!!!!!”

So now we have the irrefutable word of a Time Lord, OK, DID YOU HEAR? A! TIME!! LOOOORD!!!! That those statues actually do move. You didn’t know this??? They are space aliens that gain energy by sending you to another time and place. TER…RI…FY…ING STUFF!!!!!

So now we know that the statues are actually aliens who want to drain your life force by sending you into a another time dimension and we have seen David Tennant on video pleading desperately, “Don’t Blink!! Don’t Blink!!” And I don’t! I DO NOT! Anytime I see a statue, Eyes wide open, and never turn my back, we should understand the terror these folks have for statues. I think now is the time for empathy at the very least and maybe a call to action.

It’s very clear to me, and I’m sure you see it too, these statue hating persons watched the first Weeping Angels episode, it has to be the first, the others are scary too but the first one…nasty, the Doctor showed them the truth about statues, and then, worst of all, they probably lost someone, to a Confederate Weeping Angel Soldier statue. Not a Union Soldier statue even though its confusing because they look exactly the same, made in the same mold, but obviously they used WEEPING ANGEL Concrete in the Confederate one.

Can you imagine the terror? You can’t trust the statue. Any statue! Can you imagine George Washington with eyes, the teeth, the tongue, and with very statue-like skin texture and color coming at you to drain your life force? DON’T BLINK!!

I couldn’t understand the hatred for statues but now I do. Its the Weeping Angels! They’ll scare you senseless every time.

Of Gloating, Stealth, and Maine Politics

There has been a lot of gloating and celebrating, both stateside and across the Nation, concerning the dismal poll numbers that Senator Susan Collins is facing should she choose to run for Governor of the state of Maine. I can understand the glee. Collins has thumbed her nose at conservatives in the Republican party, specifically here in Maine, for some time now. The perceived comeuppance is a shot of a heady euphoric to the tortured conservatives of Maine.

If only it were true. You forget, this is Maine. This is the state of browbeaten conservatives with liberals and progressives infiltrated to every facet of our political landscape. Libertarians, Republicans, and Independents are all havens to Maine’s strongest political force, Stealth Democrats and Liberals.

With social and fiscal conservatives shackled to the Republican Party like a battered slave with Stockholm Syndrome meekly rejoicing every election cycle when the GOP gets religion again and tosses out morsels of lies packaged as campaign promises if we will only hold our nose and vote for their candidate to perpetuity, the stealth liberals have been free to move and manipulate throughout every dark corner of Maine’s political spectrum and solidify an unbeatable system to victory. With little to no resistance to call them out, the Party of Stealth is alive and strong. They control everything.

The system is relatively new. It was concocted by Eliot Cutler and Angus King to usher in the King governorship and new passage for liberals to gain political power. It nearly worked for Cutler against Governor LePage. And it will work for Senator Susan Collins.

The plan is very simplistic which is why it is effective. Run as an Independent to exploit the strong independent fabric of Maine voters, in so doing you catapult over the primary mess that is Maine, and you weaken the establishment parties by culling much of their voters out. If Collins runs as a Republican, she is crushed in the primary which is why she won’t.

Susan Collins is a political machine and a veteran. She has played this game for much longer than those who are prematurely celebrating her demise. So here is a dose of reality.

If numbers hold the way they are for a Republican primary with Collins, she will leave the Party and run Independent. She will skirt the damage of a brutal primary. She will then be able to pull from her voting base, Republican liberals, liberal Independents, and a majority of Democrats.

Conservatives, such as I, may be tempted to gloat her dismal poll numbers. The satisfaction of not having to hold your nose to vote for Collins will be a brief heady high. Much to my chagrin, the prediction is an easy one to make. Susan Collins will be the next Governor of Maine but she will not be Republican.

Bonhoeffer on Stupidity the entire quote

Taken from a circular letter, addressing many topics, written to three friends and co-workers in the conspiracy against Hitler, on the tenth anniversary of Hitler’s accession to the chancellorship of Germany.

‘Stupidity is a more dangerous enemy of the good than malice. One may protest against evil; it can be exposed and, if need be, prevented by use  of force. Evil always carries within itself the germ of its own subversion in that it leaves behind in human beings  at least a sense of unease. Against stupidity we are defenseless. Neither protests nor the use of force accomplish anything here; reasons fall on deaf ears; facts that contradict one’s prejudgment simply need not be believed- in such moments the stupid person even becomes critical – and when facts are irrefutable they are just pushed aside as inconsequential, as incidental. In all this the stupid person, in contrast to the malicious one, is utterly self-satisfied and, being easily irritated, becomes dangerous by going on the attack. For that reason, greater caution is called for than with a malicious one. Never again will we try to persuade the stupid person with reasons, for it is senseless and dangerous.

‘If we want to know how to get the better of stupidity, we must seek to understand its nature. This much is certain, that it is in essence not an intellectual defect but a human one. There are human beings who are of remarkably agile intellect yet stupid, and others who are intellectually quite dull yet anything but stupid. We discover this to our surprise in particular situations. The impression one gains is not so much that stupidity is a congenital defect, but that, under certain circumstances, people are made stupid or that they allow this to happen to them. We note further that people who have isolated themselves from others or who lives in solitude manifest this defect less frequently than individuals or groups of people inclined or condemned to sociability. And so it would seem that stupidity is perhaps less a psychological than a sociological problem. It is a particular form of the impact of historical circumstances on human beings, a psychological concomitant of certain external conditions. Upon closer observation, it becomes apparent that every strong upsurge of power in the public sphere, be it of a political or of a religious nature, infects a large part of humankind with stupidity. It would even seem that this is virtually a sociological-psychological law. The power of the one needs the stupidity of the other. The process at work here is not that particular human capacities, for instance, the intellect, suddenly atrophy or fail. Instead, it seems that under the overwhelming impact of rising power, humans are deprived of their inner independence, and, more or less consciously, give up establishing an autonomous position toward the emerging circumstances. The fact that the stupid person is often stubborn must not blind us to the fact that he is not independent. In conversation with him, one virtually feels that one is dealing not at all with a person, but with slogans, catchwords and the like that have taken possession of him. He is under a spell, blinded, misused, and abused in his very being. Having thus become a mindless tool, the stupdi person will also be capable of any evil and at the same time incapable of seeing that it is evil. This is where the danger of diabolical misuse lurks, for it is this that can once and for all destroy human beings.

‘Yet at this very point it becomes quite clear that only an act of liberation, not instruction, can overcome stupidity. Here we must come to terms with the fact that in must cases a genuine internal liberation becomes possible only when external liberation has preceded it. Until then we must abandon all attempts to convince the stupid person. This state of affairs explains why in such circumstances our attempts to know what ‘the people’ really thing are in vain and why, under these circumstances, this question is so irrelevant for the person who is thinking and acting responsibly. The word of the Bible that the fear of God is the beginning of wisdom declares that the internal liberation of human beings to live the responsible life before God is the only genuine way to overcome stupidity.

‘But these thoughts about stupidity also offer consolation in that they utterly forbid us to consider the majority of people to be stupid in every circumstance. It really will depend on whether those in power expect more from peoples’ stupidity. than from their inner independence and wisdom.’
