The “Truthiness” Bill

Once again the “Honorable” Senator Doug Thomas has produced a nearly unanimous by-partisanship in Augusta. A feat to be proud of; I’m not so sure. Senator Thomas is the sole sponsor of a bill so egregious that all the representatives in the House voted against it save one. Thomas’s one ally, Diane Russell, was a socialist Democrat from Portland.

LD 1834 would have given government bureaucracy the authority to determine for the people of Maine what is truth and what is a lie in a campaign. I guess Senator Thomas feels we are not capable of doing that for ourselves. His socialist friend agrees. In her speech to support the Thomas’s bill, she affectionately called it the “truthiness” bill. She was thrilled that she and “the good Senator …agree on something”. She admonished the legislature asking them, “Do you really want to leave it up to ‘The People’ to determine whether that’s true or false? She further extolled the “virtues” of the “truthiness” bill saying, “These are the important issues of our time and it is absolutely imperative that a government agency give us a hand-up on the truth.” Ah, a piece of legislation only a socialist could love.

We The People of Central Maine do not need government to “give us a hand-up” to understand truth. Is this really the way Senator Thomas feels about his constituents? Does he really believe we can’t think for ourselves? This is one more government intrusion we don’t need.

But this is not the first time the “good” Senator has forced Republicans and Democrats to join forces to stop him. Remember, he sponsored a bill to raise the fee on snow machine registration and impose a fine for late registrations. It was killed in committee by unanimous consent.

State registrations are a takings or a tax. So it is ironic that Mr. Thomas is attacking Paul Davis for not signing the tax pledge, while Doug Thomas signed the pledge and then proceeded to sponsor a bill to not only raise taxes on snow machines, but also fine those who registered late. So you make the comparison: One man prefers to let his record speak for itself and keep his pledge to the people by his actions, another, signs a pledge, then sponsors legislation to raise taxes all the while waving his signed tax pledge around like a get-outta-jail-free card. Where is the “truthiness” here?

His version of “truthiness” also has Paul Davis voting against the tax cuts. What Thomas fails to acknowledge is that Paul Davis voted against the budget because the Governor asked him to, along with a group of fellow conservatives in the legislature. The Democrats had watered down the Budget and the Governor vowed to veto it. He needed Conservatives to stand with him and Paul Davis did.

I wonder; Are all the other conservatives who stood with the Governor guilty of the same “crime” as Paul Davis? I’m sure they would like to know. Maine People Before Politics says that Paul Davis has a 100% rating of voting with the people. So, where is the “truthiness” here?

I think Mr. Thomas wants an exemption from his own bill. He is proud, though, of the glowing review he received from the Bangor Daily News. I recently heard former Senator Steve Hall state emphatically, “You can’t believe anything from the Bangor Daily News!” I couldn’t agree more!

The recent events surrounding the forced resignation of Brendan Eich from Mozilla FireFox have Americans from all walks of life enraged that such a blatant degradation of the basic rights of the individual should happen in this Nation. Mr. Eich was forced to resign and write a letter of apology to homosexuals after it was learned he made a donation to a Pro-Traditional family organization. It is more than ironic that the CEO for the organization that demanded Eich’s resignation is also “guilty” of making a donation to the same organization.

This travesty against American freedom is coiling around the framework of our Nation’s foundation like the slither of a constricting snake, binding and crushing until all freedom and life are gone. A fellow worker grilled a staffer from Penn State until she “admitted” that she supported traditional marriage. She was terminated. Craig James, former New England Patriot running back turned analyst for Fox Sports was heard voicing his support for traditional marriage. He was dismissed from Fox Sports.

The litany of attacks on Christians and Conservatives over this issue goes on and on. We were promised this would not happen. Homosexuals simply wanted equal standing and the same rights as heterosexuals. But it seems expressing an opinion, I believe we call it free speech, is a right afforded only to certain persuasions and ideologies. All others must be silenced. Even liberal commentator Bill Maher calls this the beginning of the “gay mafia”.

Free speech is a Right, but marriage is not. Still, this fallacy is the foundation for much of the gay marriage agenda. They believe that homosexuals have been discriminated against. They demand the same “right” to marriage as heterosexuals. But marriage is not a right. It is a rite. For some a religious rite, for others a rite of passage, a coming of age, and these rites are influenced by the social structure and ethnicity of the families, which pass down these traditions, these rites.

Traditional marriage is protected under the Constitution in at least two different areas: The Freedom of Religion (Religious Rites) and the Pursuit of Happiness (Social and Ethnic Rites). These are the two basic reasons the persecuted sought out the New World: To worship as they pleased and to raise their children in the way they saw fit. Ah, but we the enlightened have legislated to the American people that the heterosexual traditions of marriage, created by heterosexuals for heterosexuals for the purpose of passing traditions on to posterity, are no longer protected, do not belong to them exclusively, and must be handed over to homosexuals on the basis that homosexuals are predisposed to their sexual orientation.

By law, we have now entered into the private lives of every American and given government the authority to sit in judgment of every tradition passed down through family generations. Those who hold the power of government can dictate to you your faith, your values, and your home. If you disagree with this “enlightenment”, you are to be silenced, your livelihood taken away, and who knows what other persecutions will be meted out to you for the sin of an opinion.

While the majority of scientists agree that there is no proof of a genetic disposition to homosexuality, still we as Americans are allowing our freedoms to be trampled for the sake of a hypothesis. Therein lies the greatest travesty of all. The fault lies with us.

Sir Edmund Burke famously said, “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing”. Our Nation is filled with good men, good women, but we have sat silently as our liberties are being squeezed out all around, all in the name of tolerance to a lifestyle choice. So, who then is to blame for our family traditions held hostage, our fellow citizens brutalized by the “gay mafia”, and the fundamental fabric of our Nation torn apart? The silence is deafening.

Stating the Obvious

The truth has to be told. The truth deserves an audience. Much has been made of the Governor’s recent comments referring to newspapers as his greatest fear. While most in the media have mocked this statement with much derision, it would be wise for us as citizens to pause and take stock in the message the Governor is trying to convey to the State. The media has a vested interest in their disdain for the Governor but the residents should take a much more unfiltered and less prejudice view of his words.
Even a grade school study of history renders many stories of such great civilizations that have fallen by the manipulation of knowledge. Oftentimes what is told to the populace is not so dangerous as what is not. There is a great ideological battle waging for the freedom of information we take for granted. Truth and knowledge is the pivot on which this battle turns.
The 1960’s and 1970’s saw rise to great social turmoil. The “establishment” was questioned and reviled at every level. Our capitalistic society was demonized by the youth on many of America’s college campuses. Many of those youth now hold the power in our country. Many now control the print and visual media of our Nation. Much of their intent in legislative work and through the media is to tear down the capitalist framework of our nation. It is a framework most of us hold dear, but something that the “me generation” despises.
So, ironically, these that now hold power over information have become guilty of committing the very sins against their fellow man that they accused the so-called establishment of during riotous 60’s and 70’s. The media blocks anything in print and in video that could cause disruption to an established agenda set by the Democrat Party. There is much evidence to prove this, too much in fact, to fit into one column.
This is simply the introduction into what will be a several week series on the many blatant omissions by the major media outlets in Maine and nationally. The Governor was merely stating the obvious and soon it will be clear to any that read these subsequent columns, that many in the media have put their own political interests above the futures of the people of Maine. And, yes, Mr. Governor, that is indeed something to fear, not what we do know, what we don’t know.

A Fickle Farthing and Promiscuous Priorities

A recent newspaper article cites studies showing the test scores of Maine students are unchanged and, in some locals, getting worse. Many Maine students and their families are bound into underachieving educational institutions and cannot choose better alternatives. Sadly, the results of public education bear out the statement of former Secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice, who said she could “look at your zip code and tell whether your going to get a good education…. The crisis of K-12 education is a threat to the fabric of who we are.” Yet, the first act of the new Democrat majority in Maine was to cut education funding. This after the Republicans in the last legislature increased funding for education. Democrats seem blindly attached to the status quo in the defense of their own special interests.
So what of priorities and what of choice? Is education to be bound to a rigid one-size fits all mandate governed by the few and the outdated? Should the first goal of the Democrat majority be to cut funding to schools and deny choice to Mainers?
They have already disparaged the most vulnerable of Maine by attempting to block payment to the hospitals, which tend to our sick and needy. Our hospitals are financially strapped as a result of Democrat passed legislative mandates. These financial agreements made between hospitals and State was made with a certain expectation of fidelity and honesty in the relationship. It was expected that restitution and payment would be made for services rendered. But Democrats have found other more enticing endeavors to fund with monies bound by contract and law. As usual, the dutiful partner is left holding the bill for the harlotries of the promiscuous other half.
The Democrats have regained the majority and have quickly showed the true intent of their soul by the revelation of their first and foremost of priorities. They have first cut funding to our schools, then are attempting to block the payment to hospitals, attempting to cut funding to charter schools, blocking school choice and, of course, a myriad of legislation to ban guns. Do you feel represented or repressed here in the new Democrat majority?
